Beyond Cuckoo's Nest
"Painting is my life. I am first, last and always a painter."

These are the words of Will Sampson, known to the world as Chief Bromden of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," a movie seen by millions, and a role that would earn Sampson an Academy Award consideration. But before this, and after, he was William Sampson, Jr., "Sonny" to his friends and family, Kvskvna ("Kuskuna"), meaning "left hand" to his tribe, and a full-blood member of the Creek Nation.

Author Zoe Escobar has compiled a beautiful collection of Sampson's work and interwoven with the story of his life, his work and his friends. Filled with over 120 photographs of amazing color artwork and pencil sketches, this book is a true keepsake.

"I met William "Sonny" Sampson, Jr. in 1977, while working as a receptionist at his business manager's office in Hollywood, California. Sonny had already worked in several feature films, notably as Chief Bromden in"One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," and Ten Bears in "The Outlaw Josey Wales."

The man who walked into the office that day looked like neither character. He looked like a cowboy, a six-foot five-inch cowboy wearing Wranglers, a well-worn cowboy hat, and a big shiny belt buckle from his bull-riding days. I tried to be professional. So did he. But it was instantly clear, we might be spending a little time together outside the office. He was forty-four at the time, and I was twenty-seven. - ZOE ESCOBAR
